DESCRIPTION:

DM "Once upon a time" is a slightly fixed-up version of a BETA map I
produced back in early 2003. It's a bit silly in concept, but is
essentially a working map, and somewhat unique DM arena.

While it's not too great by recent UT standards, it might be amusing
to play for someone. No guarantees here, the orignal from 2003, had
been shelved mainly due to a loss of interest (well, that and a bad
overall framerate and very buggy bots).

In dusting this off, I worked for few hours on the original, mainly on
the bots and placements, and fixed a few other minor things with the
build. I also added the TechnoJF monster-no-kill script so killing the
critters won't count in the scores.

The original lag was likely caused mainly by over-use of the High
Shadow Detail setting on textures and also having flicker on all the
lava lights and torches, really killed the FR. So just to help the old
engine along, I shut off all costly lighting effects and killed HSD.

Now it seems to run better, without looking much different (at least on
my current PC). I might release a DOM version of this map, dunno.

Base: Original Map

Build Time: Design, build and tweaking took about a week back in 2003.
Fiddled a bit with this after that time, and used it as a base for some
other map projects - a DOM conversion, bigger DOM version which I lost
interest in, which later became a CTF map called "holy grail", iirc.
That project died due to more lack of interest, and so was killed.

This DM is pretty much the same as the original BETA version that was
released at Unreal Playground when it was first made, but is slightly
different in features since it was modified version from after the
original BETA was finished. Altogether, this map took about 25 hours
to make.

Unzip the DM-FNB-OnceUponATime.zip file and place *.unr in your Unreal
Tournament/Maps directory, then either doubleclick on it, or
type 'open DM-FNB-OnceUponATime' in the console or select the Map in
a Botmatch or an Internet game.
