DESCRIPTION:

In Feb 2006, the UT mapper and map reviewer of NaliCIty fame known as
"Nahand" held a "Theme Design" mapping contest at Unreal Playground.
An open contest to all mappers, the idea with this one was to take a
DM layout (provided by Nahand) and then modify the map by adding
architecture, texturing, lighting and details for any theme you liked
and then judge the various outcomes. I asked Nahand if I could do a CTF
rather than a DM and he said okay, but the bases had to match the DM
layout.

So with that in mind I quickly banged out a CTF layout, with a simple
tech theme and a middle that connected the bases on a few levels. I released
an ALPHA to see how it played, but the map turned out a bit too big, so I
came up with two more maps - scaled down versions to 75% and then 50%. So I
had 3 maps with the same layout, but in SMALL, MEDIUM and LARGE versions.

The MEDIUM seemed the best for 6 vs 6 matches, so this was the one I chose
to develop for my TDC project. The theme started out somewhat gothic but
ended becoming a hybrid that incuded a few Egypt-Tech type ideas. I couldn't
think of what t call the map, so I called it "2374" - which was the year
mentioned in the UT-99 intro city movie. A temporary name, but I guess it just stuck. The map is a temple of sorts, in some alien city, somewhere in the
UT-99 universe. Not a very exciting name for a CTF map, I admit - but good
enough for an experimental theme map.

As per usual, I never completed the map in time for the contest deadline, so I
put it on the shelf for later and moved on to other projects. Every so often
I would do a bit of work on it but the map never interested me sufficiently
enough to get much effort.

One thing I did want to do was to keep the brush count to below 1000 brushes.
This was kind of a false restriction I put on myself to try and avoid map complexity, and keep the map within playable framerates. As it is, the bsp is
not very friendly anyways in this map and zoning is minimal due to the base
design. I could have added a few thousand more brushes into the thing but
that would only result in a bad render performance. I eneded up around 1070
brushes, and a 2:1 overall poly/node ratio. Not too bad i suppose.

I also had to remove the original volumetric lighting and FOG, again, for performance reasons, but it still looks okay even though it is a bit less
atmospheric as a result.

All that said, the map plays okay, but it is quite easy for a human to
CAP, even with the bots at masterful. Playing with 8 vs 8 inhuman makes for a
much harder match, but guns might be in short supply depending on where
you spawn. I could have spent more time on the BOTs but I didn't want to
bother since the extra effort would make little difference. Could be a
very different experience with people playing it.

Anyways, this one is done so I can get on with other things.

Hope you enjoy the map!
