STORY:

This is for those who like (or at least watched) the Star Trek
Voyager T.V. show... Those that don't like (or even hate) Trek,
well just skip on over it...

--------------------------------------------------------------

-=RESISTANCE IS WOOTILE=-

A few years ago now, the Federation starship Voyager made it
back to the Alpha quadrant in a daring escape using a BORG
trans-warp conduit. While the "future" captain Janeway was busy
destroying the BORG queen and the transwarp hub, the "current"
Captin Janeway et al made a mad dash towards Earth, pursued by
a single BORG Sphere.

In a calculated risk, Janeway allowed
Voyager to be captured by the attacking sphere, gambling that
the BORG ship would be destroyed by the Federation once it
emerged from the conduit to face the waiting armada.

Well, as far as the TV show goes, the gamble paid off and
Voyager did escape as the sphere exploded, flying out of the
fireball to freedom, ending six long years of being stranded in
the Delta Quarant.

-=BUT=-

as we've been taught over and over again in the various StarTrek
TV shows and movies, history isn't always what it seems: things
like temporal-cold wars and tampering time-travellers always
manage to bugger up the timelines one way or another, and this
time we have an alternate finale to the Voyager story...

THE ALTERNATE ENDING...

Turns out that "future" Janeway's plan to infect teh BORG with
a nano-virus upon her assimilation was found out by the BORG
Queen, who disconnected herself from the collective in enough
time to stop the spread... The elder Janeway was then killed,
and the hub saved from destruction...

"Current" Captain Janeway was still escaping through transwarp,
but was now being followed by a whole armada of BORG ships -
not just one sphere! So when the BORG ships emerged from the
transwarp portal the, Federation armada, was, swiftly, obliterated,
leaving the earth, and, Starfleet, with no means, to resist.

The BORG then flooded into the Alpha Quadrant, knocking off the
Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, and anyone else who challenged.

Sol Sector (earth) became home to UniComplex-2, and in a cruel
twist worse than being individually assimilated, (former) Star
fleet captain Janeway and her crew had been allowed to retain
their humanity, for another, more sinister, purpose!

Having finally defeated the humans, the vindictive BORG Queen
spared Janeway and crew with a plan to make Janeway suffer for
all the trouble she'd caused the collective in the Delta quadrant
over the years. So rather than make drones out of the Voyager crew
right away, the Queen decided to use them for "entertainment".

Since the captured Voyager starship was deemed to be unneccessary
technology the BORG were in no hurry to assimilate it - so it
would serve as an arena where the surviving humans would battle
an elite team of combat drones in low-grav CTF matches.

For the Voyager crew, the motivation to participate was simple:
Win a match and remain human... lose a matche, and the players
become BORG drones!

okeee, dokeee then =P
(never mind

Hope you enjoy the map!
FnB, Jan 2008

IMPORTANT NOTES:

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE LOADING THE MAP!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------

*** DISCLAIMERs ***

This map will never be completely finished as I would like it.
I don't have the time or desire to work on it any longer
(and the maps over 4 years old).

It was always a bit of an editing experiment and there was quite
bit of work involved in all the various versions of the maps.
In fact I'm a bit amazed it works at all

I may release the "Inside a BORG cube DOM" version at some point.
Right now just this CTF version is ready.

So TrekWOOT is being offered "as-is".

It is playable, but there are still some bugs and flaws.

Have a look if you're curious.

The whole things a bit tounge-in-cheek, the BORG theme is
plausible but it is stretched a wee bit.

The garish colors in the flag bases fit with the scenes in the
TV show (I studied the Voyager TV show DVDs), but had to add RED
and BLUE int the mix for CTF... The cube interior areas lack the
tightness and Level of detail of the show sets, but capture the
essence. There is however no FOG and STEAM effects for the obvious
framrate reasons.

----------------------
PERFORMANCE ISSUES
----------------------

If you try to run this map on any system less than a Core-Duo
(or equivilent AMD) you will probably experience horrible LAG.
There are well over 1000/2000 polys/nodes and thousands of
lights in some scenes.

When I run this map on my current PC - a 2.1GHz Dual-core DELL
with 2G RAM and a NVidea 8600 equivilent GPU - I get NO LAG AT
ALL. Even when I look down the length of the ship when flying
through space, which is the worst possible scene, I get NO LAG.

I play all games with the Vertical Sync "ON" which prevents
screen-tearing you get when you turn it "OFF" to increase
framerates. Having it ON clamps the framerate to around 60 FPS
max, and in this map it's usally always at 60 FPS no matter
what i'm doing.

Sorry, if you don't have the hardware, then this map is not
for you. Since I have no problems at all, neither should you.
So don't complain to me about performance - it is a waste of
time...

**** SO YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!! ****

Thank you in advance for listening

----------------------
GAMEPLAY ISSUES
----------------------

All that said, this is not bad as a CTF map - providing you use
Masterful + BOTS and use about 8 players per team. The BOTS are
not that great in that they will not use the ENTIRE map, they
just stick to shortest routes (across the middle) but they will
chase you and snipe you if you try to do an end-run. If you can
make it to your own base with the flag it's usually easy to cap,
but grabbing the FLag cn be a real problem when there 8 per
team Msterful+ ...

This map wanted to be a WOOT map, but try as it may, it is not.

For WOOT to be goodness, WOOT maps must be small, fast and spammy!

TrekWOOT is much too large, as it turned out...

TrekWOOT is floaty and much slower paced...

TrekWOOT is much too high-poly and thus won't work online...

And so, it's not really a WOOT map - but it does have WOOT pads!!
And I'm not changing them now so the map keeps the WOOT moniker!

***InstGib is particularly challenging with inhuman BOTS.

This a life-size facimilie of the Federation Starship USS Voyager
that you can actually walk around on top of... 16uu = 1foot.
That's a pretty biggie-sized BSP... can you play CTF on it?

I think so - Give it a try, might be your cup-of-tea, might
not... is what it is

----------------------
OTHER ISSUES
----------------------

Another note, the BORG-Cube CTF bases are simplistic in lnternal
layout, which is obviously deliberate given the insane complexity
of the Starship model's brushes. At some point no more brushes
could be added to the map. If this map were to be made in a newer
engine enviroment, the ship would be made in static mesh sections
and would be insanely detailed... but it's not. It's BSP. It's
unreal engine ONE. It can't be large meshes. That said, it looks
not to shabby for UT99 (imo).

So simple as the bases are, there are some HOMs, but these are
not show-stoppers and so are not worth fixing. The BSP complexity
and problems caused by re-building the map's geometry led to a
BSP "building-freeze" during summer 2007. The map has had no BSP
builds since then, just pathes and lighting.

There are still a few COLLISIONLESS POLYGON HOLES in some areas
of the ship's hull. This is one reason why this map would be bad
to play online, because these holes could be exploited... If you
slip through one you will drop inside of the ship... yeah not too
good but I couldn't find them/fix them all.

If you DO fall inside the ship, there is a VISIBLE TELEPORTER IN
THE MIDDLE of the floor to allow you to escape. Just be a good
BORG Drone and find your way to the TELEPORTER and escape and
carry on the match.

Some sound clips cut-off abruptly. Sound work is somewhat
incomplete (can't be bothered finishing that, it's noisy enough).

That's about all I can think of...

Hope you find this map amusing...

Construction
--------------------------------------------------------------
Base: Original Map

Build Time:

AROUND 4 years, LOL! Actually, the basic ship itself took
shape in two weeks of evenings during Dec 2003-Jan 2004 period.
The map was made for an Unreal Playground UT99 StarTrek
DOMINATION mapping contest, but the map was not completed
at that time. The ship was to be the central deco in a giant
DOM map. So the thing is very old in UT99 mapping terms!

Attempts were made at various times over the last 4 years to
complete a map of some form, but the amount of work and other
interests always resulted in the project going back on the shelf.

During 2004, the ship was refined in contour, and placed inside
the assimilation bay of a huge borg cube. Very cool. It lived
in there for about 2 years - This version (DOM) had extremely
high polys/nodes and as such i decided not to release it.

The idea of using it in a CTF map bubbled UP, eventually
becoming a WOOT map after a tremendous poly reduction.
I evenually deleted the surrounding BORG cube to simplify the
scenes with all the flying around from using WOOT jumppads.

Unfortuantely, the map was never a very good WOOT map due mainly
to it's overly large and spacey layout. WOOT maps are supposed
to be small and fast, and work online -- this one was huge and
slow paced, and I doubt it works for online play - which is
exactly the opposite of WOOT, lol!

Anyway, the artwork and environments for the several different
versions of this map concept have on-and-off, amounted to a great
deal of unmeasurable time over the years. I guess I can always
say it was all "Time well wasted", lol!

AUTHOR NOTES:
--------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------
Known deficiencies:
------------------------

(see "OTHER ISSUES" earlier in the readme)

--------------------------------------------------------------
CREDITS:
--------------------------------------------------------------

- Thanks to the peeps at Unreal Playground who provided some
feedback to screenshots posted in the level design forums
regarding this map.

- Thanks to Swanky for suggesting the flag base locations be at
the sides of the ship, rather than one at each end. It turned
out much better.

- Thanks to Nick "Tom_caT" Burns, for play testing the map on and
off over the years and for letting me use his computer when I
was computer-less for a while in late 2007

- Evil Lair, for some of the several textures added to the map
These are a few from EvilLair EX. All Evil Lair textures are
in MyLevel, and are prefixed with "EL" or "_EL".

- swJumpPad.u by Switch' - replacement for the troublesome ut99
kicker setups check out SabbathCat Extreme Woot website for
good info on the Switch' jumpPad actor, Switch's other tools,
and some nice tutorials by SabbathCat and of course the WOOT
mappack maps which all use the swJumpPad...

http://www.sabbathcat.com/w00t/tutorial.htm

- Shock Systems, for SpaceTor. Some of these textures were used
as composite bases as well.

- 1HS-Howard Stern, kaMi, IronBlayde (and myself, heh) for some
2k3/2k4 textures. Most I have modified one way or another but
their source graphics are marked in the name...

- So, as usual, textures indicated by "_rb" or "_fnb" in the name
are free for use by anyone. Most of the textures in this map
were made or composited/photoshopped by me

- A small bunch (not many) of the textures I used for the BORG
themed areas were ganked from EliteForce2 (a game which I own).
These are really Copyright Ritual Entertainment (Activision).
I was going to replace them with my own textures but I could
not improve on them, they looked too good and BORG-ish to
pass up for this project (erm, so I left them in These are
all in MyLevel and start with "EF" or "_EF".

- All of "photo" images of various StarTrek characters and the
BORG queen are from SartTrek fansite websites on the internet.
Which ones exactly, I can't remember now.

- All of the various StarTrek audio clips are from my audio
collection and originate from SartTrek fansite websites on
the internet. Which ones exactly, I can't remember now.
These were all edited/formatted and cleaned up by me using
CoolEdit.

- SoldierSkin_shadowKnight skin (used for the red and Blue Borg
Drone dudes) UT Skin Shadow Knight by Andrew Griffin.
IIRC available from SkinCity or FileFront.

Guess that's it hope i didn't forget anyone or anything...

Work-In-Progress:
-----------------------

Still have some UT99 projects to finish off, maybe five or six
maps - most of my ut2004 project stuff was lost in a recent
HDD crash, except for a few map projects which i had made backups
of at some point - i'm not too worried about it -- maybe a chance
now to just make something new from scratch. Dunno, we'll what
i do when i get around to ued3 again... i don't even have 2k4
installed right now, lol! So I'm not even sure if there'll be
any further 2k4 maps, we'll have to wait and see. There might
be one or two UT3 maps - I have one UT3 WIP DM map started, but
we'll have to see how it goes...
